Introducing the Remington Style Hindi Keyboard by KrutiDevMangal!

KrutiDev to Mangal has created a special keyboard layout for typing in Hindi, inspired by the Remington keyboard. This idea came from our work in e-learning with Hindi-speaking learners. We noticed that many learners hesitated to participate in course forums because typing in Hindi on their devices wasn't as easy as it was on their desktop computers.

These learners were used to typing in Hindi using fonts like Kruti Dev or Dev Lys for Devanagari, and we wanted to make it simpler for them. We explored different methods but faced challenges with existing converters.

Three Major Typing Methods Considered:

  1. Transliteration:

This method is suitable for those who can express their thoughts in Hindi but haven't learned a Hindi keyboard layout. Popular solutions come from Google and Microsoft. Users type Hindi phonetically in Roman script, and the system converts it to Unicode Hindi. Corrections may be needed if the system guesses wrong, and alternative options appear in a dropdown list.

  2. Inscript Keyboard Layout:

This layout is standardized by the Government of India and is popular among Hindi journalists. Despite being a government standard, many government offices still use the Remington layout due to established typing habits.

  3. Remington Keyboard Layout:

The Remington layout is the most popular way to type Devanagari script, initially used with Remington typewriters. Previous attempts at Unicode conversion faced challenges due to the complex nature of combining characters in Devanagari.
